ENGLISH

Attention!
The Origó Hungarian as a Foreign Language exam will change in 2027. The exam in its current format will be offered for the last time in February 2027. From June 2027, only the new Origó MONO Hungarian as a Foreign Language exam will be available.

Since April 2000, the ELTE Origó Language Centre has been offering state-recognised monolingual exams in Hungarian. In addition to the accreditation requirements, we have developed our general language exam system in line with the criteria set out in the Framework of the European Association of Language Testers (ALTE) and the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). In developing our general language examination system, we studied international examination systems and, of course, drew on our own decades of experience with our internationally recognized bilingual examination system. Accredited exams are available at levels B1, B2, and C1, while we offer non-accredited exams at A2 level. Hungarian citizens can take exams in any accredited foreign language, but only non-Hungarian citizens can apply for exams in Hungarian as a foreign language.

A2 START – non-accredited exam

The oral exam consists of an informal conversation with the examiner on topics appropriate to the level, within the framework of the specified topics. During the conversation, we touch on several topics, focusing primarily on personal matters: the examinee’s daily routine, habits, family, home, school or workplace, friends, leisure activities, etc. The conversation is based on the examiner’s questions and seeks to achieve natural communication in line with the candidate’s level of knowledge, rather than asking for information about the content of certain topics.  Unlike in accredited exams, when discussing a picture, we do not expect a monologue after a short description of the picture, but rather a conversation about questions and topics related to the picture. In the exam, we are not interested in the recital of memorized texts about the topic but rather in whether the examinee can communicate about basic things in simple language based on simple questions, simulating real-life situations and conversations that occur in everyday life.

The written exam is monolingual and assesses reading and writing skills.
